| Did Droid smartphone put Motorola back on the map?
Publish On 12-31-2009 , 2:35 PM
The Verizon Motorola Droid is certainly one of the hottest devices offered right now for fans of the Android OS - and the buzz it has generated is no small victory for Motorola. Motorola was a major player in the cell phone revolution, but has struggled in the last few years to stay relevant in the smartphone era.
Motorola opted a risky strategy of putting most of their eggs into the Android basket, and thankfully for them the play seems to be paying off. By all reports the Droid has sold briskly, with reports in early December indicating they have nearly sold 1 million units in the US alone.
It looks like Motorola is feeling confident as they have also apparently purchased a 2010 Super Bowl commercial slot, estimated to be worth 2.5-3 million dollars. That is no small investment but they must feel, based on the current sales figures for the Droid phone, that they will likely get a solid return on investment.
The device is the first Android phone to offer Android OS 2.0. It features a large wide screen 3.7" display, a slider keyboard, a 5MP camera, with WiFI and Bluetooth support. It is currently offered on Amazon for a discounted $149.99 price with a Verizon Plan. By: MobiGuy Sources:Source1 Source2
