| Aceeca breathing new life into retro Palm OS.

The classic Palm has been declared dead and buried by many people for years now. I just noticed, however, that apparently the company Aceeca is presently working to release two new industrial class Garnet OS (AKA Palm OS 5) PDA devices in 2010.
I don't see any references to the devices on the company website at present, but according to the rumors: The entry level PDA dubbed PDA32 will feature an ARM processor, QVGA screen, and SD card expansion for a $199 price tag.
If you have a heftier budget you could spring for a $499 device dubbed MEZ1500 Garnet. For the extra price you will receive a faster processor, QVGA display, as well as an expansion slot for optional accessories. Apparently you can even add bluetooth and/or WiFi to the deal for a little more.
Looking at some of the comments out there regarding this news, I see some net citizens have been giving Aceeca flack for the so called high price tag considering it is without a phone and runs an older OS.
But to be fair to Aceeca, you have to keep in mind that this device was built for industrial applications. It looks like they build devices designed to survive water and harsh conditions. Could your consumer smartphone handle being run over by a tank? I didn't think so..
Furthermore many corporations still prefer the simplicity and the battery power benefits that the Palm Classic OS provides.
So while it might not be your cup of tea, it is perfect for some and worth every penny in that context.
For my part, it makes me smile to know a new Garnet device is in the works.
The Palm/Garnet OS still very functional and I think people abandon useful technology way too easily.
Heck, I'm even a little tempted to buy an Aceeca for consumer use just for the fun of it, even though my budget will probably overrule that temptation.
